Field Trip December 7, 2017
to the Whirligig Park, Wilson, North Carolina
¡Hola! Bienvenidos a la clase de Español 1 en Gates County High School, Carolina de Norte, USA
Over 70 students, from 9th to 12th grade, have been learning to speak in another language...for the first time.
This month they will go on a joint field trip with the art students to visit the Whirligig Park, a unique sculpture park in the center of Wilson, North Carolina. Afterward, they will enjoy 'el almuerzo' at El Tapatio in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. ¡Buen provecho! |
WHIRLIGIGS were made by Vollis Simpson, a retired machine repairman and Army Air Corps veteran. He died in 2013 at the age of 94. He live in Lucama, near Wilson, NC. Now his whirligigs have been moved to downtown Wilson into a unique sculpture park. A team of artists, engineers, and volunteers have been working for several years to repair, re-build, re-paint and very carefully move the sculptures from his property to downtown. We met some of them and they told us about the challenges. They have also given names to the whirligigs, but originally Simpson didn't give any names.
What do you think is the difference between a pinwheel and a whirligig?

Many images below were taken in the workshop. Any part of the sculpture that had reflectors would shine when you used the camera flash..
